On April 2nd, Elephant and Piggie's We Are in a Play! was performed at the River Run Centre as part of the miijidaa family series. This was my toddler J's first time attending a River Run production in the main theatre. Elephant and Piggie's We Are in a Play! was the perfect play to introduce him to live theatre performances.
Elephant and Piggie are unlikely best friends. These lovable animals are characters from the popular, award-winning, children's book series written by Mo Willems. Elephant Gerald is lumbering and sad, while his best friend Piggie is happy and fun. They compliment and bring out the best in each other. J enjoys reading the Elephant and Piggie book series so he was thrilled see some of his favourite storybook characters come to life.
Elephant and Piggie's We Are in a Play! is a vaudevillian musical romp all about friendship. Through singing and dancing, friendship themes such as sharing, playing, helping, and working together are explored. After Elephant and Piggie are reunited they play, get over the disappointment of a broken toy, decide what to wear to a fancy dress party, and most importantly have fun. The background singing trio - the “Squirrelles” - are an excellent addition; they sing, comment on the scenes, and jitterbug in and out of the action. The play is essentially what a typical day would look like in the friendship of Elephant and Piggie.
I'm thrilled that we were able to see such a fun show in Guelph. J's favourite part was at the end when the audience was encouraged to participate. It's been a few days and he still asks if we can go back and see the show again. Unfortunately for J, Elephant and Piggie's We Are in a Play! only had one performance at Guelph's River Run Centre. The great news is that he had a wonderful first theatre experience and that the River Run Centre is always providing amazing shows for audiences of all ages.
